Comprehensive Cutting Course!

In this 3 hour course, McMow co owner Phil, will be teaching students all about glass cutting and breaking techniques, the different tools to assist, and the "do's and don'ts" of cutting glass.  So if you have ever wanted to learn how to cut properly from a professional, this is the perfect opportunity. 

 

This class is ideal for students who have taken an entry fusing, mosaic, or stained glass class, and anyone who wants to polish their glass cutting skills. Phil will also be showing a brief overview on how to use the Morton System.

    We are so excited to announce that we are currently showcasing the work of Eileen Feldman, our 2014 Glass as Art contest Best in Show winner, here in our showroom. Her pieces are gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, highly detailed, and mixed media- that are also for sale!

"As a mosaic artist, I love to use sheets of glass and manipulate them into beautiful art. Cutting and placing the glass on a cement board allows artist's to use the project as an interior or exterior art. Smalti is a dense glass with intense color that is also used with stone, small virtuous glass, and shards. All this makes for unique glorious art."- Eileen Feldman

Advice for Cutting Glass

Here are a few great helpful tips to always keep in mind when cutting glass:

* Always cut on the smoothest side of the glass

* Score from edge to edge.

* Make sure the cutter has cutting oil in it at all times, however it is not nessesary to fill the entire cutter with oil.

* Try to purchase more than enough glass incase mistakes and breaks happen.

* When cutting deep inside curves, make a series of scores and slowly bite and groze your way to the desired curve. Also when doing difficult cut's we recommend using your free hand thumb against the wheel to help guide the cutter for more control. - Try to cut the deep inside curves and difficult curves first.

About the Sponsor:
McMow Art Glass offers the best in stained glass windows and beveled art glass, as well as beautiful designs in carved, etched and faceted glass. McMow Art Glass maintains an excellent working relationship with top builders, architects and designers and regularly ships their work throughout the US, Europe and South America.

What is eligible?
Amateur art glass artists are able to enter their work into the following categories:
- 3-dimensional
- Original design Stained Glass
- Pattern adaptation from a book or other source stained glass
- Mosaic glass
- Fused glass/Jewelry
- Professional

All entries must be 6 square feet or under. Works must be display ready with hooks and/or stands. No broken or damaged work will be accepted. Professionals may also enter into their own Professional category. A professional is anyone who sells their artwork and makes a living from it.
What to Send:
There will be a $5.00 entry fee per piece. Up to 3 pieces may be entered. Please submit payment with photographs of your work with entry forms. If submissions are entered electronically, payment must be received over the phone via credit card.

Deadlines & Labeling:
Deadline for submissions is March 21st . Finalists will be notified by phone the week of March 26th-28th. Pieces selected for competition need to be dropped off the week of April 1st -5th Pieces will hang in the gallery until May 3rd . Pieces will need to be picked up by May 10th at the latest. The contest reception will be Friday April 25th 6-8pm.
